Pundit: Everton are in 'big trouble' and Benitez knows he cannot save them as 'truth' revealed

Rafa Benitez knows Everton are in “big trouble” after conceding his side are not good enough in possession, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker suggested no manager can help Everton after their latest defeat to Crystal Palace.

As quoted by the Daily Mail after the 3-1 loss at Selhurst Park (12 December), Benitez claimed his team “are not amazing in possession” and “must realise it”.

According to sofascore, Everton completed just 70 per cent of their passes and ended the game with 39 per cent possession.

Asked for his assessment of Benitez’s comments, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It’s just the truth.

“There’s no point hiding behind a lie, Everton are very poor and don’t have a style of play. They look like they need a bit of brilliance from Demarai Gray to get a goal.

“It’s going to get harder and harder for them, there’s no easy game in the Premier League. They are in for a tough rest of the season.

“Other players aren’t turning up. Everton are in big trouble. Benitez will know that.

“They need Dominic Calvert-Lewin back as soon as possible. It’s going to be a long season.

“If players can’t keep the ball, you can’t coach players technically to keep the ball. The formation they played against Palace should be one where you can keep the ball. If the players can’t do that, a manager can’t help them.

“It’s the player’s fault, not the manager’s fault.”
