Tottenham defender Matt Doherty will have to work hard in training to convince manager Jose Mourinho he can be trusted again, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England full-back claimed Mourinho will be “absolutely fuming” with the Republic of Ireland international after his “needless” red card against Leeds last weekend.
Doherty was handed a first league start for nearly six weeks against his former side Wolves last month but followed it up by being sent off for two bookable offences against Leeds last week.
He was handed a starting role because Serge Aurier had given away a penalty against Leicester City the weekend before despite putting in an impressive display against Liverpool.
Asked by Football Insider whether £16million man Doherty had blown his chance to establish himself as Mourinho’s first-choice right-back, Mills said: “No, I don’t think so.
“Aurier came in and made a mistake by giving away the penalty [against Leicester] and came straight back in.
“There’s not an awful lot between them, I would suggest, in Mourinho’s head.
“As much as Jose would have been absolutely fuming with the needless red card he will understand that if he is a player that he can utilise and he’s the strongest player in that position, he will use him. Simple as that.
“It’s up to him to make amends, to show that he is sorry by performing in training and not doing silly things again in matches.
“Look at Ndombele. We all thought Ndombele was done and dusted several times and Mourinho has gone ‘look, the guy’s got talent, I can use that. I just need to get the best out of him.’ and that’s what he’s done.”
