Pundit Exclusive: Leeds are in 'Fantastic' position after huge transfer development

Michael Brown has claimed Leeds United are in a “fantastic” position to cope with the change of transfer rules thanks to their academy set-up.

The former Leeds midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has lauded the Whites’ “great” youth system and insisted they would have no trouble in developing promising talent into first-team prospects.

In a statement last week, the FA confirmed new regulations would be in place from the turn of the year regarding the recruitment of overseas players, including a points-based work permit system.

The change of recruitment rules will also see a blanket ban on British clubs bringing in under-18s from overseas, while there will be a six-player-per-season limit on foreign under-21 signings.

Having seen Leeds consistently produce youngsters good enough to play at the top level, Brown has suggested the new transfer regulations will only boost the Whites’ development process.

Brown told Football Insider: “They’ve got a great academy, the list goes on, it’s endless. You’ve got to say it’s a great catchment area that they’ve got and I think they will continue to do so.

“I just think you see the pathway, you see the youngsters involved, we’re seeing them make the squads, new signings, bringing more in so I think it’s good signs.

I just think it’s going to be such a strange market to see who’s worth what, who will pay whatever it may be for any player and I just think if you can bring through youth, it’s fantastic.”

Leeds have seen a number of youth prospects make their name at both Premier League and international level, including the likes of James Milner, Danny Rose, Aaron Lennon and Paul Robinson.

Kalvin Phillips is the most notable homegrown talent currently in the Leeds squad, while the likes of Jamie Shackleton and Charlie Cresswell have also featured in the senior side.

In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has been blown away by young player he was wrong about with “amazing” stats.
