Danny Mills believes Liverpool cannot get away with playing Fabinho at centre-back for much longer, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Manchester City and Leeds United full-back urged the Premier League champions to sign a new defender in January.
Fabinho has deputised for Virgil van Dijk since he suffered an ACL injury against Everton on the 17th of October.
It now seems unlikely that the Dutchman will play again this season and Jurgen Klopp is also without Joel Matip.
The 29-year-old also picked up an injury in the Merseyside derby and it remains unclear how long he will be out for.
Fabinho gave away a penalty against Sheffield United on Saturday but the incident was not without controversy as the challenge appeared to happen outside the box but the VAR official deemed it to be inside the area.
Asked by Football Insider about Fabinho’s performances in defence, Mills said: “You can get away with it as Fernandinho did for Manchester City.
“But it’s about how long you can get away with it for and can you get away with it against the top sides.
“You can fill in maybe for a couple of months, but you’re a specialist in most positions for a reason.
“Fabinho at centre-half, compared to Van Dijk, is 75%, why would you not go and get a signing who is 85% of Van Dijk? It’s 10% better than playing someone out of position.
“That’s the way I tend to look it and think about it.
“You also don’t have Fabinho in midfield so you’re doing it from both, that’s the problem.”
Fabinho has played 89 times for the Reds since moving from Monaco in 2018.
The 27-year-old has played eight times this season, with four of those in defence and the other four in midfield.
In other Liverpool news, a top pundit has been left in awe of a 17-year-old who will play a lot of games for the club.
