Adrian faces an extended demotion to third choice goalkeeper at Liverpool following the “fantastic” performance of Caoimhin Kelleher on Tuesday night.
That is according to former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs about the situation between the sticks at Anfield.
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp made the shock decision to select Kelleher ahead of Adrian for Tuesday’s vital Champions League tie against Ajax in the absence of the injured Alisson.
Adrian has started all three previous matches this season in which Alisson has been injured but was snubbed by Klopp on this occasion.
On his Champions League debut, Kelleher produced a Man of the Match display to secure Liverpool qualification for the Champions League knockout stages.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the young goalkeeper’s performance in the 1-0 win over Ajax, McAvennie said:
“Adrian was only there as a number two and now he is number three, and could be for a long time.
“Let’s remember that he wasn’t getting a game at West Ham. I just think he will be happy to be at Liverpool.
“He has let them down a couple of times but by and large he has performed okay.
“This young boy Kelleher was fantastic the other night and has taken over the number two spot.
“Adrian has plenty of money now – does he want to play? Or does he want to be part of a winning Liverpool squad.”
