Pundit Exclusive: Spurs told to sign ‘Outstanding’ Spain international after critical injury update

Tottenham should consider signing free agent Diego Costa on a short-term deal after Harry Kane sustained a double ankle injury against Liverpool.

That is the view of former England defender Danny Mills, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about how Spurs are going to cope without their talismanic forward.

Kane was substituted at half-time in Tottenham’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Thursday night after going down with an issue twice during the first 45 minutes.

Manager Jose Mourinho told BBC Sport after the game the England captain will be out for at least a few weeks.

This site broke the news last week Tottenham had made a fresh move for Southampton striker Danny Ings as he continues to stall over a new contract.

Asked by Football Insider whether the north London club will step up their pursuit of Ings in light of Kane’s injury, Mills said: “There’s also Diego Costa still out there, you know.

“OK, he’s got one or two issues that you have to deal with Diego Costa but as a short-term measure from now to the end of the season I’m surprised nobody has taken a gamble on him. With his record which is outstanding.

“Carlos Vinicius is there to step up but I think it depends how long Harry Kane is going to be out for.

“That’s ultimately going to be the key. Is it going to be 10 days to two weeks or is it going to be a month to six weeks?

“That’s what Mourinho will be fearful of. Harry Kane has had injuries in the past but he’s always come back from those injuries and when he’s back to fitness it doesn’t look like those injuries are holding him back in any way shape or form so that’s a good sign for Tottenham.”

Spain international Costa, 32, left Atletico Madrid at the end of last month after having his contract terminated and remains a free agent.

In other news, three senior stars have been tipped by a top pundit to exit by Monday.
