Kevin Campbell is baffled by Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ treatment at Arsenal after the midfielder was overlooked for a start in the FA Cup last weekend.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners striker said it is “crazy” that the 23-year-old, “who has proven that he is more than good enough”, is being overlooked.
Maitland-Niles was named on the bench for Saturday’s FA Cup match against Newcastle United while Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock were handed rare starts.
The England international has made 20 appearances across all competitions this season but is yet to enjoy a regular run of games in the side.
According to Sky Sports, the versatile midfielder was the subject of interest from Wolves in the summer but opted to remain in London and fight for his place.
When asked by Football Insider if Maitland-Niles exit from the Emirates is looking increasingly likely, Campbell said: “It is a strange one, very strange.
“An England international who keeps getting overlooked, it is crazy. I do not know what is going on but I am sure he is not going to be happy.
“When he has played, he has proven that he is more than good enough but he just does not get a chance. It is baffling.
“At the end of the day, I will let Mikel Arteta manage the football club. I am sure there will be decisions made by the player and the club soon.
“What is the point? If he is not being picked then why would he want to hang around? That is a decision that will come up I am sure.”
