Pundit Exclusive: West Ham player may be holding out for £20k-a-week deal as talks stall
Noel Whelan suspects financial reasons are behind Jeremy Ngakia’s decision not to sign a new deal at West Ham as the defender exit from the club nears.
The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 19-year-old “is holding all of the cards” and will have attracted interest from clubs across Europe with his displays this year.
Football Insider understands that the right-back is not expected to play for the Hammers again after snubbing the club’s offer of a long-term deal.
Ngakia is out of contract on 30 June and looks destined to leave the London Stadium for just a compensation fee this summer.
Whelan suspects the teenager’s agent has a lucrative deal for his player lined up elsewhere.
“He has been given the opportunity and I am sure the club have been trying to put a pen and paper in front of him to get him to sign a new contract,” he told Football Insider.

“He seems to feel that he is worth a lot more.
“When you get players like that, they know what other players are getting paid. It will not be a secret that he wants £20,000 a week. He is still a young lad but he may feel he is worth that.
“He has been playing in the first team so there needs to be a discussion with the owners and the manager if they want to keep him. If they do not feel he is worth that amount of money he will go.
“He is holding the cards right now. He has been playing in the first team and is out of contract soon.
“Ngakia will have caught the eye of many clubs home and abroad. His agent will have done some digging and there might be a move for him that is more appealing.”
