Pundit ‘feels sorry’ for Lingard after ‘crazy’ Man United transfer update

Kevin Phillips “feels sorry” for Jesse Lingard with Manchester United reportedly demanding “crazy money” in negotiations with Newcastle United

The former England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Magpies must be “principled” and walk away from talks.

According to the Guardian (26 January), Lingard, 29, feels “let down and disrespected” by his boyhood club Man United after the collapse of a potential move to St James’ Park.

The report claims the Red Devils are demanding a £2.5million loan fee for the midfielder, as well as a £12million bonus if the Magpies avoid relegation this term.

Lingard has just six months left to run on his deal at Old Trafford.

Phillips slammed Man United for “playing games” with the England international.

“I feel sorry for Lingard,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“I don’t know why Man United are playing that game – it’s not exactly like Newcastle are in competition with them at the bottom of the table.

“The numbers they’re asking for is just crazy money. From the club’s point of view, no matter how much money they have – Newcastle have to be principled and realise that it’s just way over the top.

“You have to feel sorry for Lingard because I’m sure he wants to play. I would understand if they were rivals in the table, but they’re not.”

Lingard has played just 273 minutes of football for Man United this season.

The midfielder netted nine goals and contributed five assists during a six-month loan spell with West Ham last term.

His Irons stint reignited a faltering career and put him back on the radar of England boss Gareth Southgate.

Newcastle have until 11pm on 31 January to strike a deal for Lingard.
