Pundit hails ‘massive’ Kent news after Rangers reveal via Sky

Ryan Kent’s public commitment to Rangers is “massive” for new manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, according to Kevin Phillips.

The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is adamant Van Bronckhorst is desperate to keep hold of Kent, 25, amid recent transfer speculation.

As quoted by the Daily Record (1 December), Kent told Sky Sports his “immediate future” was at Ibrox.

Leeds United

The winger added that he wants to achieve more success with the Light Blues, having helped the club win the Scottish Premiership last season.

Kent has been linked with a move to Aston Villa since Steven Gerrard’s move to the Premier League club.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Kent’s comments, Phillips said: “It’s massive.

“Kent is one of their best players. Van Bronckhorst will want to keep him so he can get this title wrapped up.

“It was a great win for them against Hibernian the other night. It puts them firmly in the driving seat.

Rangers

“Kent is an integral part of that squad. In football, anything can happen. We all know that. If a Premier League club comes knocking in January he may want to go.

“But, for the player to come out and say he is happy at Rangers and sees his immediate future at the club, it’s great news for the fans. Van Bronckhorst will want to keep hold of him, I’m sure.”
