Pundit hails new FSG deals after £300m-plus Liverpool reveal
Gabby Agbonlahor has backed FSG’s strategy of securing key players to new Liverpool contracts rather than spending money in the transfer market.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker delivered his verdict after Liverpool’s wage bill was reportedly revealed.
The Liverpool Echo, as relayed by Anfield Watch (September 14), report only Manchester City have a higher payroll (£351million) than Liverpool’s £325million in the Premier League.
The Reds’ wage bill has shot up by 95 per cent in the last year as revenue increased by just 64 per cent.
Ibrahima Konate was the only major addition to Jurgen Klopp’s squad over the summer who joined in a deal worth £49million in fees and wages.
Instead, the Merseyside giants have been busy securing Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Alisson and Fabinho to new contracts.

“I understand their transfer window,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“That’s a lot of money for the owners to be shelling out every year. I understand why they maybe haven’t been able to spend the money and bring in lots of players.
“But securing those players to long-term contracts might be the key. It’s great work from FSG. Using the kitty they’ve got to do that.
“I see no problem with that.”
Despite their relatively quiet transfer window, Liverpool are unbeaten in their opening five Premier League games and are top of the table along with Chelsea.
The two clubs have an identical record after drawing 1-1 at Anfield earlier this month.
