Pundit has new take on James Tarkowski controversy as latest Everton footage analysed

Alan Hutton has suggested Bournemouth were right to play on against Everton despite James Tarkowski suffering a head knock.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said players can only do what the referee tells them to do.

As shown on Sky Sports (12 November), Tarkowski went down with a head injury in the build up to Kieffer Moore’s second goal for the Cherries.

Referee Craig Pawson allowed play to continue despite the fact that the Everton defender was down holding his head inside the area.

Bournemouth went on to win the game 3-0.

When asked if players should make more effort to stop play if they see a head injury, Hutton told Football Insider: “It all comes down to what you see at the time.

Did you see the head knock happen, how bad was it. At this moment in time a player can only do what the referee tells you to do.

We are all taught to play to the whistle and the referee will stop the game when he sees fit. I know it is putting a lot of added pressure on to the referee to make that quick decision.

If it goes against you, your player goes down with a head knock and they score, it is like a double blow. The players could possibly stop but ultimately it is down to referee to make that decision.

If he sees it being a bad one then he needs to stop the play.

In other news, a pundit can’t believe ‘shambolic’ footage at Everton – ‘there’s no coming back’.
