Pundit hits back at ex-pro as ‘bizarre’ Declan Rice claim issued at West Ham – ‘end of story’
Kevin Campbell has urged Gareth Southgate not to “mess about” and play West Ham star Declan Rice at centre-back despite Stuart Pearce’s suggestions.
The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Three Lions already have “specialists” who can line up in defence at next month’s World Cup in Qatar.
Speaking to talkSPORT (23 October), former West Ham assistant boss Pearce claimed Rice would be “outstanding” as part of a three-man defence for England.
The 23-year-old Irons captain has hit out at similar comments in the past, branding the suggestions as “bizarre”.
As per Transfermarkt, Rice has previously been deployed at centre-back in 20 senior games after experience in the position at youth level.
The midfielder, who is out of contract at the London Stadium in June 2024, has played 90 minutes in each of West Ham’s 12 Premier League games this term.
Campbell told Football Insider: “Declan Rice is a midfielder, he’s not a centre-half.
“He can play there, yes, but there are specialists already in that position for England.
“For me, Declan Rice has to play in the middle of the pitch at the World Cup. End of story.
“Gareth Southgate can’t be messing around and playing him at centre-half.”

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (15 October) that Rice has no intention of signing a new deal at West Ham despite receiving a “jaw-dropping” offer.
The midfielder has turned down an eight-year offer which would have netted him £200,000-a-week.
