Pundit issues ‘100 per cent’ Newcastle United claim after source’s Jesse Lingard reveal

Newcastle United “could absorb” Jesse Lingard’s sizeable wage demands this summer, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is “100 per cent” sure the Magpies would fund a deal for the 29-year-old if he was keen to join.

Lingard is a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Old Trafford.

A recruitment source told Football Insider (4 July) that the attacking midfielder is holding out for a deal worth £150,000-a-week at his next club.

According to the Mirror (3 July), West Ham, Tottenham, Everton and Newcastle United are all keen on signing the 32-times England international.

Campbell questioned whether Lingard would be keen to move to Tyneside.

“You have not got a transfer fee to pay,” he told Football Insider.

“That means the player’s wages goes up. That is just the way it works.

“Most of these clubs could absorb those wages because there is not transfer fee.

“Newcastle could pay it, 100 per cent.

“The key is, does Lingard want to move to there? Is the package right? If the package is not right he is not going to move there but if it is, he could be tempted.”

Lingard was a bit-part player for United in the 2021-22 campaign and contributed just two goals and one assist in 21 appearances across all competitions.

The majority of those outings came as a substitute.
