Pundit issues ‘big’ Arthur Melo claim after Liverpool source’s intriguing update

Arthur Melo will have a “big impact” at Liverpool after joining the club on deadline day.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Reds’ latest signing.

Melo, 26, joined Liverpool on loan from Juventus on deadline day (1 September) as the club’s lack of depth in central midfield was finally addressed.

The same day, sources told Football Insider that the deal includes a buy option set at £32.5m, which comes into effect at the end of the season, as well as a loan fee of £4million.

McLeish insists this is not a “hasty” signing from Liverpool.

“Liverpool really strive to get the right guy, that is one of the most important things to Klopp,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“That is why, maybe, the progress seemed a little bit slow at times. Klopp is a very intelligent manager and he can find a way to win any game without looking to go and buy a new midfielder.

“They play at a blistering pace. If they have that kind of attitude, speed and accuracy, they can challenge for that top spot with the squad they have.

“So if anyone does come in, you would have to back them to have a big impact because Liverpool don’t make hasty signings.”

Melo joined Juventus in the summer of 2020 and made 63 appearances in the two seasons he has so far spent in Turin.

He moved to Italy after failing to make a mark at Barcelona.
