Pundit issues emphatic Darwin Nunez verdict after president's Liverpool reveal

Kevin Campbell has backed Darwin Nunez to score ” a hell of a lot of goals” for Liverpool once the team hits their stride.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker is adamant the Reds have not overpaid for the 23-year-old striker.

On 14 June, Jurgen Klopp’s side completed the signing of Nunez from Benfica in an £85million deal.

Speaking to BTV (9 September), Benfica president Rui Costa claimed the sale of the centre-forward was “more than justified.”

Costa said it was “completely impossible” for the Portuguese club to turn down such a sizeable offer.

Nunez was a second-half substitute in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday (13 September).

When asked by Football Insider if the Reds overpaid for the Uruguay international, Campbell said: “I don’t think Liverpool have overpaid.

“Darwin Nunez is a good player. I have seen enough from him during his time at Benfica and the games that he has played for Liverpool.

“The thing is, Liverpool have dropped a level this season as a team. They are not hitting the heights that they used to hit. When they click, Nunez is going to score a hell of a lot of goals. I have no doubt about that.

“The problem Liverpool have got right now is that they are playing catch-up with City. They made up 14 points last season.

“I do not think they will be able to do that this season because the rest of the Premier League is stronger. You do not want to get too far behind that City team.”

In other news, a pundit has claimed Man City have been handed an advantage over Liverpool in the title race after an official announcement.
