Pundit issues emphatic Everton claim as Amadou Onana jets in - 'one of the best'
Noel Whelan has suggested Everton may have made “one of the best signings of the summer” as a deal for Amadou Onana nears completion.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, backed the 20-year-old midfielder to help Frank Lampard’s side pull clear of a relegation battle this season.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano (6 August), Onana is in England and undergoing a medical at Everton after a full agreement with Lille was struck.
He claims that the Toffees will pay a fee of €36million (£30.3million) plus a further €4million (£3.4million) in add-ons – as well as a 20% sell-on clause.
West Ham were also interested in the midfielder but their move reportedly collapsed after a contract disagreement.
Onana, who has one cap for Belgium, made 40 appearances for Lille in the 2021-22 campaign – mostly from the substitutes’ bench.

Whelan insisted a deal for the youngster is much-needed at Everton, who lost Fabian Delph and Donny van de Beek in the off-season.
“He’s at the right age to hit the ground running,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“West Ham hit a stumbling block and felt they couldn’t agree the personal terms. Everton have swooped in and are obviously confident they can do that.
“Everton need midfielders and more quality in there. They feel that Onana is the player to get them out of the position they were in last season.
“It’s a move which could have real longevity, he’s only 20. It could be one of the best signings of the summer if they can beat all these other sides.
“They’re hoping that he can be a big part of the midfield for however long his contract may be.”
