Pundit on Fabio Carvalho being handed new Liverpool role after confirmed news

Frank McAvennie has poured cold water on the idea of Fabio Carvalho playing as a number 10 for Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker suggested Roberto Firmino is seen as the only option in such a role by Jurgen Klopp.

Carvalho has been a bit-part player for the Reds since joining from Fulham in the summer.

The 20-year-old has featured predominantly as a left winger in those outings.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (3 November), Carvalho revealed his preference is to play on the left-hand side or as a number 10.

However, he conceded Jurgen Klopp’s side rarely play with a recognised number 10.

When asked by Football Insider if Liverpool may adapt their system to accommodate Carvalho in such a role, McAvennie said: “No, I don’t think Klopp will try that out.

“Firmino is the guy who plays in that number 10, false nine kind of role for Liverpool. He drops off into space when [Mohamed] Salah plays up front.

“I do not know if Klopp would put Carvalho in that Firmino role. Firmino is a wonderful player. He is so clever with his play.

“Carvalho just has to listen to how Klopp wants him to play. If that is out wide, he needs to knuckle down. It is down to him to do that.

“It is all fine and well saying where you want to play but it is up to the manager at the end of the day.”
