Pundit issues 'incredible' Sven Botman claim after Newcastle United latest

Sven Botman’s reaction to Southampton’s goal against Newcastle United speaks volumes about his “brilliant” mentality.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the “incredible” defender.

Botman, 22, started against Southampton on Sunday (6 November) as Newcastle recorded a 4-1 win.

The Magpies were robbed of a clean sheet when Romain Perraud fired into the top corner from just inside the box with five minutes to go.

After the goal, Botman could be seen reacting furiously, berating his teammates and throwing his arms in the air.

McManus insists this is the sign of a top-class player.

“When you see that reaction to a goal when you are already 3-0 up, it says a lot about the man,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“He hates conceding, that’s obvious, he’s a defender. But it’s those high standards that he is trying to impress on the players around him.

“It’s a good sign. Keeping a clean sheet for them is the same as scoring a goal for strikers. It’s their job.

“So even though Newcastle were pretty much home and dry, you still have players who are not happy with the performance.

“For me, that’s brilliant, what a mentality to have. Botman has been incredible when I’ve seen him play and this is another side of his game.”

Botman has started all but two of Newcastle’s 14 Premier League games this season and is yet to suffer a defeat at his new club.

Newcastle are next in action against Chelsea on Saturday (12 November).
