Pundit issues Jurgen Klopp sack claim after ‘terrible’ Liverpool development

Noel Whelan has insisted Jurgen Klopp’s job is not under threat at Liverpool despite the sacking of Thomas Tuchel this week.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 55-year-old must now “get a reaction” from his players after a “terrible” start to the new campaign.

Liverpool were trounced 4-1 away at Napoli in their Champions League opener on Wednesday (7 September).

The Merseysiders have notched just nine points from their first six games of the Premier League season.

Tuchel became the first high-profile managerial casualty of the season on Wednesday (7 September) after a similarly poor start in domestic and European competition.

When asked if the Liverpool board could follow in Chelsea’s footsteps, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think so.

“His working relationship with the owners is fantastic.

“He’s got a good relationship with the players – but he’s got to find that bit extra from them now.

“That’s what being a manager is all about, picking them up and getting an extra bit of juice out of them.

“Salah is one who looks completely off the pace right now. They need to get him involved, because when he’s flying – Liverpool are usually flying.

“This is why Klopp gets paid big money. He’s got to get a reaction out of them after a terrible performance and a terrible start.”

Liverpool face Ajax at Anfield on Tuesday (13 September) in their next Champions League match.
