Pundit issues Liverpool title prediction amid Klopp ‘huge problem’ verdict

Alan Hutton has claimed Liverpool should have signed a new midfielder to fill the void left by Georginio Wijnaldum this summer.

The former Tottenham defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted injury problems to key players was a “huge problem” for the Reds last term.

Liverpool’s only senior signing signing of the summer window was centre-back Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.

However, the Reds have also handed contract extensions to a number of their stars including Jordan Henderson, Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Alisson, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Hutton admitted he thought Liverpool would sign another midfielder following Georginio Wijnaldum’s departure.

However, he still tipped Jurgen Klopp’s men to challenge at the top of the table.

Hutton told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “They haven’t really plugged the Gini Wijnaldum gap.

“They’ve got a decent midfield but there’s probably room for them to bring in somebody. I think the fans wanted that as well.

“The front three can be fantastic on their day. Van Dijk coming back will be important and I’m looking forward to seeing Konate when he gets a chance.

“They will have a lot more to give than they did last season.

“Injury was a huge problem for them last season but they will be up there, even if they didn’t do as much business as other sides.”

Liverpool

Liverpool finished third in the Premier League last season after struggling with injuries to key players.

The Reds have enjoyed an unbeaten start to this season, picking up seven points from a possible nine.

In other news, this pundit has claimed Liverpool’s deadline day announcements were “a smokescreen”.
