Pundit issues 'massive' Raheem Sterling claim after Man City update

Man City would be handing Chelsea a “massive” boost in their bid to win the Premier League in the 2022-23 season if they sold them Raheem Sterling, according to Noel Whelan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League striker insisted Sterling is a matchwinner and it would be a “mistake” for Man City to let him go.

Sky Sports reported on Monday (20 June) that Chelsea are confident of agreeing personal terms with the 27-year-old but the two clubs have different valuations of the winger.

City want a £60million fee for the England star who only has a year left on his contract, while Chelsea believe £35million would be a fair price.

“I think it would be a good fit [for Chelsea],” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I’m not sure it’s viable. When you come to rivals and players that do make a massive impact, there’s no doubt about it Raheem Sterling is a massive player for Man City who makes an impact and wins them football matches, then they’d be reluctant to let them go to another top three club that could damage their chances of retaining the title.

“If any deal is going to be done then they really should be able to do it abroad, if possible.

“If any deal can be done between themselves and PSG or Barcelona, something like that would make more sense to me.

“I don’t see the sense in letting a player leave that could jeopardise your chance of winning the FA Cup, the League Cup, the Premier League and the Champions League. That would be a  strange, strange decision by Man City if that happens.

“To send him off to a rival club would be a mistake in my opinion.”
