Pundit issues ‘massive’ Steven Gerrard sack ultimatum amid Aston Villa source’s new reveal

Noel Whelan has suggested Steven Gerrard could be sacked by Aston Villa if he can’t pick up six points in the next three games.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Midlands giants are “void of ideas going forward” despite boasting a wealth of attacking talent.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (13 October) that Aston Villa are weighing up Gerrard’s future after supporters once again chanted for his dismissal after Monday’s (10 October) 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

A well-placed Villa source explained that owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens have a big decision to make over whether to stick with the former Rangers boss beyond the winter World Cup.

Football Insider revealed on 30 September that Mauricio Pochettino and Villarreal boss Unai Emery are top of the club’s target list.

Aston Villa have won just four of their last 20 Premier League games ahead of clashes against Chelsea (16 October), Fulham (20 October), and Brentford (23 October) in the next week.

Whelan insisted Gerrard is “under massive pressure” at Villa Park.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Steven will be the first to admit that it’s about results.

“It’s not even about great performances, it’s about getting those wins.

“It’s been frustrating for him and for everyone watching them. They’ve got a fantastic squad of players, but it’s just not clicking.

“They look void of ideas going forward. Draws just aren’t enough when playing against teams like Nottingham Forest, who they should be beating.

“He’s under massive pressure.

“The Chelsea game won’t be easy, but Fulham and Brentford – you’d expect them to get maximum points or the writing could well be on the wall for him and his job.”
