Pundit issues Moyes 'behind the scenes' claim at West Ham after 'big' Johnson decision

Paul Robinson has heaped praise on West Ham manager David Moyes for his “big call” over Ben Johnson.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Tottenham and England number one said Moyes was right to stick with the “exceptional” Johnson, 21, for the trip to Villa Park.

Johnson helped the Hammers keep clean sheets against Everton and Spurs in the absence of Vladimir Coufal.

On Sunday, Moyes picked the youngster over Coufal, who had recovered from injury in time to face Aston Villa.

Johnson went on to score in a 4-1 win over Dean Smith’s side.

The result saw the Irons go level on point with Premier League champions Manchester City.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Moyes team selection, Robinson said: “It was a big call but the right call from Moyes.

“Ben Johnson has done exceptionally well.

“You have to give credit to Moyes. I know how meticulous he is and how hard he works on the training ground on a daily basis. Morning, noon and night he is working on that team.

“It is not by luck that West Ham are doing well. They are being rewarded for hard work. The work from Moyes behind the scenes cannot be underestimated.

“When you see players like Ben Johnson come into the team and take his chance you have to give the manager credit for putting him in and sticking with him.”
