Pundit lauds 'amazing' new Tottenham hire after talking to club icon
Jermain Defoe’s return to Tottenham is “amazing” for the club’s young stars.
That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about two new recruits at Spurs.
Yaya Toure and Defoe are set to join the Spurs academy coaching staff on a permanent basis.
Spurs expert and Football Insider pundit John Wenham told this site on Monday (1 August) that Toure will be managing the club’s Under 16 side while Defoe will serve as a general striker coach.
On 1 December, Sky Sports reported Toure was working alongside Spurs academy coaches Dean Rastrick and Chris Powell on an informal basis to gain experience.
McLeish is not surprised to Defoe also giving back to the game.

“It’s amazing, Defoe has been an incredible servant for several clubs,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.
“It’s not a surprise for anyone to see that he is putting something back into the game, albeit it as a striker coach.
“That compartmentalized him, teaching his own skills and secrets to strikers. Why not? That’s what a lot of people are doing nowadays.
“I was speaking to Robbie Keane the other day and he was talking about doing something similar, which is ideal because there are no greater finishers than Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane.”
Defoe left Rangers in January 2021 and rejoined his former side, Sunderland.
However, he decided to retire just two months later.
