Pundit 'loves' West Ham plot to sign red-hot Antonio ally amid £25m update

Noel Whelan has insisted Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton Diaz could be a “very successful” signing for West Ham this month.

The former Leeds attacker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed David Moyes could help the 22-year-old take his game to the next level.

As reported by the Express on Thursday (20 January), Brereton Diaz is Moyes’ top striker target this month as he looks for attacking reinforcements.

Rovers are reportedly seeking a £25million fee to let their star forward go this month.

The Hammers boss has already confirmed he is in the market for a new centre-foward as competition for Michail Antonio.

Whelan suggested Brereton Diaz could fit the mould perfectly.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Moyes is a Championship magician, isn’t he, when it comes to getting players and making them better.

“Jarrod Bowen is a prime example. A really, really good player who keeps getting better and better.

“The way Brereton Diaz has gone about his season, he’s set off like a rocket, 20 goals already. When you start scoring goals like that and consistently scoring goals, it makes people’s hairs prick up and take notice.

“To win football matches you need goalscorers. They lost Haller and never replaced him. Antonio up there by himself and you need options. He would be a different option as well.

“He is a target man, you can see that with the size of him, but he’s also very clever. The way he runs off the side of players, those one-touch finishes that he has with his left or right foot. He’s very good in the air as well.

“The sort of player that I think would fit right into the style of West Ham. He’s what they would be looking for and that competition I think Antonio needs.

“They’re really creating a good environment there, I admire it, I love it. I think this could be another one of those signings, very much a successful one, where he can make a player even better.”

Antonio has scored eight goals in 21 Premier League appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Brereton Diaz has netted 20 times in 27 Championship games.
