Pundit makes Gerrard prediction after surprise decision to drop Morelos for Rangers clash
Noel Whelan has claimed Steven Gerrard will stand by the surprise decision not to start Alfredo Morelos for Rangers in the defeat to Sparta Prague.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen hitman suggested the Gers boss may have wanted to rest the Colombian after a hectic start to the season.
Morelos surprisingly started on the bench for Thursday’s game, coming on after 66 minutes.
However, he could not drag Rangers back into the tie as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Gerrard explained he chose to start Fashion Sakala instead as Rangers needed to run “fast and hard”.
Despite losing in the Czech Republic, Whelan suggested the Gers boss would stand by his divisive decision.

“Morelos is a player that’s in really good form,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“He’s scoring goals, he’s confident, but then you look at your squad, you look at how to manage players.
“That squad rotation that you need, you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t sometimes.
“You’re just hoping that the players you put in are going to perform and give you the opportunity to rest certain players that may need it.
“It’s been a very hectic start to the season for most clubs in every league. Rangers do have a big enough squad to be able to rotate.
“In hindsight, when you look back, Steven Gerrard will still believe he made the right decision. It’s down to the players he chooses to go out there and perform.”
Morelos is Rangers’ top scorer in Europe with 25 goals in continental competitions.
He has netted four goals this season.
