Noel Whelan has tipped Steven Gerrard to sign another midfielder to compete with Ryan Jack at Rangers next season.
The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 29-year-old needs to get back playing as soon as possible after his injury layoff.
As confirmed by Gary McAllister on Friday, Jack has visited a specialist in London to try and help overcome his ongoing calf problem.
Gerrard previously suggested Jack could have been fit enough to play in the first leg against Slavia Prague.
However, despite his manager’s optimism, Jack has not featured in a single matchday squad since mid-February.
Whelan admitted Rangers had missed the former Aberdeen man in recent weeks.
However, he suggested Gerrard would definitely sign another midfielder who could put Jack’s place under threat.
“He’s a player that’s got a lot of ability,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“It would only benefit Rangers to have him back in the side. Hopefully, he’s ready to give Steven Gerrard another option to choose from during that pre-season because they’re going to go out and strengthen, no matter what people say.
“You’ve won the league but you’re going to go out and strengthen. He wants to get back in the side.
“To do that, if you’ve got a niggle, you can never play your best football, you just can’t, it’s impossible.”
Gerrard currently has Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield and Bongani Zungu as his midfield options.
However, the South Africa international is likely to return to Amiens at the end of his loan spell.
