‘Horrendous’ – Exclusive: Ex-striker reacts to ‘Massive’ Newcastle blow
Martin Dubravka’s latest injury blow will be a “massive” blow for Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker suggested that replacing the 31-year-old at such a crucial point in the season will be a daunting task.
The stopper has been ruled out until at least April with a knee injury, with Karl Darlow expected to deputise for him during his absence when Premier League football returns after its suspension.
But Whelan has suggested that the second choice has big boots to fill between the sticks.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “When you lose people at either end of the field, whether it’s a striker or a goalkeeper, you know how important they are to a side.
“He’s a solid goalkeeper, there’s no doubt about that, and quality like that between your sticks will be missed. I’m sure he’ll be missed by his defenders as well because they’ll have that trust between them.
“Steve Bruce is another manager in the Premier League who has had a horrendous injury list, and it just keeps coming and coming for him – I bet he can’t wait for the season to be over. He’s had terrible luck.
“To lose the keeper at this point, yes, it’s a massive loss. It will hit them hard.”
Dubravka has been a virtual ever-present for Bruce’s side this season, featuring 29 times in the Premier League, and conceding 41 goals in the process.
As yet, Darlow has not made any appearances in the league, but does have five other outings across all competitions.
