Pundit: Roberts tipped for extended run in Leeds XI after surprise reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has surprisingly suggested Tyler Roberts may be in line for a regular run of starts for Leeds United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted it is vitally important Roberts take his chance to impress.

The attacker has featured in all seven Premier League games this season but is yet to earn his first start.

He came off the bench with just 12 minutes left of the 1-0 win over Watford at the weekend and caught the eye of Marcelo Bielsa.

As quoted by Leeds Live after the game, Bielsa surprisingly singled him out for praise after being asked who stood out for him.

He also revealed he was confident Roberts’ performances can finally match his talents.

“He hasn’t done it so far,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Maybe now he has got a chance. He needs a run of games to show what he can do and he needs to do that. Hopefully, he can.

“I’m sure Bielsa will want him to take his chance because in the Championship he was a quality player.

“To make that step up, you need to show in regularly.”

Roberts scored once and provided two assists in 27 Premier League games, including 14 starts, last season.

The 22-year-old had a torrid time in front of goal before scoring his first top-flight goal against Southampton in the penultimate game of the season.

Despite that, his performances were rewarded with a new three-year deal by Leeds over the summer.

In other news, a Leeds United star is likely to be ruled out for “six weeks” after an update.
