Pundit salutes 'great' Liverpool move as Anfield source shares Henderson update today

Frank McAvennie has hailed Liverpool after a significant update on the future of captain Jordan Henderson.

The former West Ham striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on the midfielder’s future.

A Liverpool source has told Football Insider today the club are in advanced talks to secure Henderson to a mega-money new deal.

Jurgen Klopp wants the 31-year-old to put pen to paper before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.

His current contract expires in the summer of 2023 and there was some speculation linking him to a move away.

This came after The Athletic reported on 19 July that no progress has been made in negotiations over a new contract for the Liverpool lynchpin.

McAvennie insists Henderson was never going to leave Liverpool despite what some reports suggested.

“I don’t think he was ever going to go,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He is Liverpool at the moment. I remember saying I couldn’t see him playing for PSG or whoever he was linked with.

“They are getting everyone signed up and that’s great.

“He was missed last season as well because he’s not a centre back at all. He is irreplaceable and untouchable in that midfield.

“If he stays fit, Liverpool are a better team. It’s that simple.”

Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson have also committed their long-term futures to the club this summer.

The Reds have enjoyed a strong start to the Premier League season, winning two games and drawing against Chelsea.
