Pundit says 'they think it will be easy' in verdict on Leeds signing goal sensation Toney

Leeds United would be taking a “big gamble” if they signed Ivan Toney from Brentford this summer, according to Frank McAvennie.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham and Celtic striker questioned whether the 24-year-old could cut it in the Premier League.

Toney has been one of the Championship’s standout performers this season, with his 34 appearances in the division yielding a staggering 26 goals and nine assists.

According to TEAMtalk, Brentford are set to slap a £30million asking price on the former Brentford striker with Arsenal, West Ham and Leeds all interested in his services.

Patrick Bamford is currently the only recognised senior number nine at Elland Road, but Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo Moreno can cover in that area.

When asked for whether Toney would be a welcome addition to Marcelo Bielsa’s side this summer, McAvennie told Football Insider:

“Toney has set the Championship alight but can he do it in the Premier League? Many players have tried and failed when they have come up from the Championship. Just because they set it on fire they think it will be easy but that is rarely the case.

“However, David Moyes has signed a lot of good boys from the Championship. He has obviously done his homework on them.

“It is always a big gamble to sign a player from the Championship. Can Toney make the step up? He would be playing against a lot better defenders.”
