Pundit shares verdict on Man United accepting Scott McTominay bid after deal agreed

Noel Whelan has suggested Man United should reject bids for Scott McTominay as they look to find the “perfect” partner for marquee arrival Casemiro.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old will be valuable for the Red Devils’ squad depth even if he isn’t a regular Premier League starter.

According to talkSPORT (20 August), Everton, Leicester, Newcastle, and West Ham are all interested in signing McTominay with the arrival of Casemiro expected to reduce his first-team chances.

The five-time Champions League winner has joined Erik ten Hag’s side in a deal worth a reported potential fee of £70million.

McTominay has started two of the Old Trafford club’s three games so far this season.

The 34-cap Scotland international, who made his debut in 2017, made 37 appearances across all competitions in the 2021-22 campaign.

Whelan insisted the defensive midfielder will be a useful squad player for Ten Hag even if Casemiro’s arrival leads to a reduced role.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think right now they need all the players they can get.

“There’ll be injuries, players coming out of form. They haven’t had too much to choose from in the past couple of seasons.

“They couldn’t find that perfect partnership, much like at centre-back. Now they have a chance to have that squad depth again.

“They need to now find that balance, with Casemiro coming – providing that experience and leadership. I don’t think McTominay is that player.

“Casemiro will bring a steadiness to that midfield, which they desperately need.”
