Pundit shreds Chelsea after new hire agreed – ‘I’ve got no time for that’
Frank McAvennie doesn’t understand why Chelsea have hired a mentality coach.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker claimed that hard work fixes most of the problems players will have.
As relayed by the BBC (7 February), the Blues have hired All Blacks leadership manager and mental skills coach Gilbert Enoka in a short-term consultancy role.
The 57-year-old was part of the coaching staff when New Zealand won the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and 2015.
His temporary consultancy role at Stamford Bridge will be his first work in football.
Enoka’s focus will be on developing team culture and integrating the new arrivals that have been brought in to Graham Potter’s squad over the past six weeks.
When asked if there was any need for the appointment, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I do not get all this. You are getting paid fortunes.
“If players need motivation to play at Chelsea, they should not be there. They are getting hundreds of thousands a week. Not getting picked because you are not having a good game is not a problem, that is something you can fix.

“You do not need somebody to talk to you about it, hard work fixes it. You do not need somebody to come in and talk to you. I have not got time for that.
“If there is a problem in football, hard work sorts it. I am not a big fan of that, especially if he is coming from rugby. It is a different game.“
In other news, according to sources, Chelsea are plotting box-office signing that could be their biggest yet.
