Pundit slams Allan for showing ‘no backbone’ after horror Everton reveal

Paul Robinson has insisted “it was a day to forget” for Everton midfielder Allan on Saturday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League goalkeeper slammed Rafael Benitez’s side for showing ‘no backbone or fight’ against Watford.

Everton surrendered the lead twice on Saturday in a shock 5-2 defeat against the Hornets at Goodison Park.

Benitez told club media “it is difficult to explain” his side’s capitulation in the last 15 minutes.

Robinson pointed the finger at Allan and his midfield partner Tom Davies for failing to protect their defence.

“It was a day to forget for Allan,” he told Football Insider.

“Everton just folded at the end of the game. They didn’t seem to have any backbone or any fight.

“Allan and Tom Davies were ran off far too easily. They left Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey really exposed.

“It was an uncharacteristic performance from them but you know this group of players have it in them.

“That result is unacceptable for Everton. A lot of players need to have a look at their performance after conceding five in the manner they did.”

Speaking after the loss, Benitez said: “It is difficult to explain when you are winning 2-1 and concede four goals in a few minutes.

“We made mistake after mistake and gave the ball away and allowed them too much time on the ball and they had the space to play on the counter-attack.”
