Pundit slams Man United 'leaks' as three superstars feel the heat

Alan Hutton has claimed the Manchester United front three are feeling the heat following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s switch to a heavily manned defence.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland full-back admitted he is “still worried” for the Red Devils despite the tactical switch.

Having been battered 5-0 by Liverpool, Solskjaer reverted to playing a 3-5-2 and a 3-4-2-1 formation against Tottenham and Atalanta respectively.

United beat Spurs 3-0 in what was Nuno Espirito Santo’s final game in charge but were held to a 2-2 draw in the Champions League.

The Red Devils face Manchester City next before the international break.

Hutton admitted he does not think playing a three-man defence is a long-term solution to United’s woes.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I’m still worried. I don’t think you can judge Manchester United right now off that performance against Tottenham. Spurs were shocking.

“I think United had something like more or less seven defensive players on the pitch at the time.

“You’re really then asking Cavani, Ronaldo or Fernandes to go do something special.

“I think there are times in a season where you might be leaking goals or confidence might be low. You say let’s go back to basics. Let’s defend well, not lose anything and then if we nick a goal, perfect.

“That’s what they did against Spurs. Then they grew in confidence and they went and got another one after that. It worked for them.

“Whether that’s the way forward for this Manchester United team, I’m not sure. That’s why I think in the next few weeks, we’ll be able to get a better idea of where they’re actually at.”

They have conceded 15 goals this term, more than the likes of bottom-half sides Crystal Palace, Southampton and Brentford.
