Pundit: Steven Gerrard may turn to Aston Villa youngster after expert reveals 'real blow'
Steven Gerrard may have to promote an Aston Villa academy player to replace Lucas Digne amid fears over the severity of his injury.
That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about another injury blow to Steven Gerrard’s side.
Digne, 29, was called up to the France squad for their recent Nations League double-header but has been forced to return to the Midlands through injury.
As relayed by Birmingham Live on Tuesday (27 September), French outlet L’Equippe reported that the left-back could miss two weeks of action.
Injury expert and Football Insider pundit Ben Dinnery told this site on 27 September the two-week timeframe to recover is “unrealistic”, claiming instead that a six-week absence is more likely.
“They have had a couple of huge blows, haven’t they?” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“They have already lost Carlos with a cruciate, that’s a bad injury. To lose Digne as well is a real blow.
“Hopefully Stevie has new kids coming through the academy, someone he can take a chance on or someone he can trust in to play in that high technical role like Digne does.
“It’s not an easy role and to not have your main guy there for six weeks or so, well, it’s not ideal, is it?
“Villa have had some real bad luck with injuries already this season.”
Brazilian centre-back Diego Carlos sustained an injury in just his second appearance for Villa, the 2-1 win over Everton on 13 August.
Sources told Football Insider on 16 August that he is now expected to miss the remainder of the season.
