Pundit suggests Harry Kane release clause amid Tottenham talks update

Noel Whelan has claimed Harry Kane will demand a release clause is included in any potential contract as he prepares to kick off talks with Tottenham.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 28-year-old will have “learned his lesson” after his so-called ‘gentleman’s agreement‘ with Daniel Levy was not honoured last summer.

According to the London Evening Standard (26 May), Kane is “happy” at Tottenham and open to signing a new contract with the club.

The report claims the England captain is willing to begin talks when he returns for pre-season training next month.

Tottenham will play Champions League football again next season after sealing a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Whelan suggested Kane could stipulate that any potential release clause could become active should Spurs fail to qualify for the prestigious competition in the future.

“I think Champions League football and the chance to work under Conte is probably appeasing him right now,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“If he does sign a new contract, I’m sure there will be something more concrete included in it.

“However, it has to suit the club. There will be something in there which allows him to move on for a certain amount.

“I’m sure he will have learned his lesson from the debacle last summer, and he’ll want peace of mind.

“It could be that any potential release fee becomes active if Spurs drop out of the top four. That would make sense.”

Kane, who is contracted until June 2024, saw a move to Man City fall through last summer.

He notched 27 goals and 10 assists in 50 games this season.
