Pundit suggests how long Van Nistelrooy will last at Leicester

Ruud van Nistelrooy will last “at least until the end of the season” at Leicester City after he was appointed to replace Steve Cooper.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson explained that the Dutchman remains a relatively unknown quantity given his lack of experience in top-level management.

Van Nistelrooy has an impressive CV despite his short time in management, having lifted the Dutch Cup with PSV in 2023, and went unbeaten in his spell as interim boss at Man United.

However, there is a belief that Leicester have taken a risk with his appointment and could have leaned towards appointing a tried and tested boss to turn their fortunes around.

Robinson has questioned his experience of Premier League football and suggested he may not be the man to lead Leicester to survival this season.

Despite the concerns, Van Nistelrooy has been backed to bring an attacking style of play to the King Power which should resolve the issues they faced under Steve Cooper.

Pundit shares new verdict on Ruud van Nistelrooy at Leicester City

Football Insider first revealed on 26 November that Van Nistelrooy was closing in on the Leicester manager’s job following Cooper’s dismissal.

Now, Robinson has claimed his attacking style of play should suit the players at his disposal, but hinted it may not be enough to keep them in the division.

He’s taking a chance,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s had one full-time role as a coach in the 2022-23 season with PSV, granted he won the Dutch Cup.

“But when you’re coming into the Premier League and working with a squad like Leicester have got, he’s not tried and tested in that situation.

“Is he going to guarantee you Premier League safety? I don’t know.

“But he’ll be there until the end of the season at least, because making a change at this stage, the owners won’t want to have to do it again.

“He’s a manager who has worked with high level players, he’s got a very attacking style and will certainly change the way they play.

“They’ve got players in that team that could play more of an attacking style of football, but defensively they’ve conceded too many goals.

“He’s probably ready for it, he’s a good coach and went unbeaten in his short time at Man United.

“There are credentials there, but he doesn’t guarantee anything. I suspect it’s a change that the Leicester fans would’ve wanted.”
