Pundit suggests Nuno to hold 'clear the air talks' with Romero at Tottenham after 'big mistake'

Noel Whelan has suggested Cristian Romero is set for “clear the air talks” at Tottenham after reportedly travelling for international duty without permission.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the defender had made a “big mistake” early on in his Spurs career.

Sky Sports reported on Tuesday (September 7th) Spurs will fine Romero and Giovani Lo Celso for going against the club’s wishes and linking up with Argentina.

The duo are currently training in Croatia ahead of a return to England to avoid the need to quarantine.

Tottenham swooped for Romero on a season-long loan in the summer window.

They have the option to make the deal permanent next summer for around £42.5million.

Whelan admitted Nuno had not made a good impression early doors in north London.

He told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “It’s not the best start, is it?”

“He hasn’t covered himself in glory at all by completely ignoring the club’s wishes and demands.

“You’re going halfway across the world without permission.

“It’s very disappointing on many levels for Tottenham and the manager, but everyone makes mistakes and bad decisions in life.

“I expect they’ll sit down for clear the air talks about this.

“I’m guessing a lot of pressure was put on them by the Argentina set-up, but they’ve made a big mistake by ignoring the club and flying out there.”

The 23-year-old has made three appearances for Tottenham so far this season totalling 181 minutes.

Romero and Lo Celso should return for Spurs’ London derby clash against Chelsea next Sunday.
