Pundit suggests where the real blame lies for Dele Alli after new Everton reveal

Noel Whelan has claimed no one else is to blame for Dele Alli’s Everton demise than the midfielder himself.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 26-year-old hasn’t produced a single “memorable” performance since joining The Toffees.

Alli was left out of the matchday squad as Everton defeated Fleetwood Town 1-0 in the League Cup on Tuesday (23 August).

Everton

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (23 August), Frank Lampard revealed the former England international’s move to Besiktas is at a “very advanced” stage – though not “absolutely done”.

The Daily Mirror claim (16 August) Everton would have been due to pay Tottenham £10million if Alli made 20 appearances during his time at Goodison Park.

However, the midfielder has played just 13 games since joining the club in January.

Whelan claimed Alli has not changed his game at all since he left Tottenham.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think that clause changed anything.

“Everton and Lampard wanted him to succeed and brought him to the club to do just that.

“It’s down to the player. I don’t think you can blame the club for how it has turned out.

“He’s made 13 appearances for Everton. Out of those 13, how many of them are actually memorable?

Alli

“He’s not made any contributions where you think: ‘this kid is back’.

“He needed a new lease of life but instead we just saw the same Dele Alli we saw when it got stale at Tottenham.”
