Pundit ‘surprised’ by Everton after reliable journalist’s ‘massive’ Cannavaro update

Kevin Phillips is “surprised” Everton have interviewed Fabio Cannavaro for their vacant manager’s position.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Sunderland and England striker said “it would be a massive gamble” to appoint the 48-year-old as Rafael Benitez’s successor.

Duncan Ferguson has been placed in interim charge of the Toffees while the club conduct their search for a new permanent manager.

According to The Telegraph‘s Jason Burt (20 January), ex-Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has already been interviewed for the role.

Cannavaro, who was most recently in charge of Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande, is said to have impressed his interviewers.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the potential appointment of Cannavaro, Phillips said: “It’s a surprising one.

“In my opinion, it would be a massive gamble, I have to be honest. I’m not sure how that would go down with the Everton supporters.

“Who am I to talk though? I’ve never managed before and I’ve been given my chance. Cannavaro is a hugely respected figure in the game.

“But to have him manage a club the size of Everton would be a gamble given his lack of experience. I’d be very cautious of that one.

“If I was an Everton supporter I’d rather see the club go for a manager with Premier League experience or someone who is at least proven in Europe.”

In other news, a pundit has claimed Everton can’t appoint a ‘top’ manager due to Moshiri’s ‘behind the scenes problems’.
