Pundit tells Tottenham not to complete Silva signing after Nuno deal agreed

Kevin Phillips insists Nuno Espirito Santo can’t repeat his Wolves transfer strategy at Tottenham.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Spurs needs experienced players rather than young talent.

Nuno was announced as the new Tottenham boss on 1st July as the club’s extensive manager hunt came to an end.

Last summer, Wolves signed highly-rated striker Fabio Silva from FC Porto.

However, the 18-year-old only scored four goals in 32 Premier League outings as he struggled to live up to the hype that surrounded his arrival.

Phillips insists Tottenham can’t afford to make similar signings as they need players who can come in and do a job straight away.

“There’s always a concern when you bring in unknown players who have never played in the Premier League,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“Fabio Silva looks like he could develop into a decent player. You just hope Tottenham don’t fill their squad with those type of players.

“I wouldn’t want that if I was a Spurs fan. Tottenham need to challenge for a European spot next year.

“They need to be aiming for players who have more experience and are further on in their career.”

Nuno left Wolves at the end of the season following a very successful three-year spell at Molineux.

He also managed Valencia and Porto before moving to Wolves and leading them to the Premier League.
