Pundit: This may be real ‘reason’ Scott McTominay escaped ban as Man United controversy analysed
Paul Robinson has suggested Man United midfielder Scott McTominay could have been sent off against Brighton on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League number one suspects the 25-year-old escaped a red because he caught Moises Caicedo with his follow through, rather than it being a full-blooded challenge.
McTominay was booked in the first half of United’s 2-1 loss to Brighton on Sunday after catching Caicedo with his follow through.
Referee Paul Tierney did not deem the incident worthy of a red and VAR official John Brooks agreed with the on-field decision.
Therefore, McTominay is available for the Red Devils when they travel to Brentford on Saturday.
When asked by Football Insider why the centre-midfielder was only handed a yellow against the Seagulls, Robinson said: “I think the reason he has got away with it is because he tried to kick the ball and the follow through caught him.
“It was not a tackle as such, even though I think there was some intent there.
“There is an argument that he should have been sent off. It was not a good looking challenge. In slow motion, it looks worse though.
“It was not a good one. It was close to the line. He could have caused even more problems for his team.”

McTominay started alongside Fred in the United midfield on Saturday.
The Scotland international made 37 appearances across all competitions in the 2021-22 campaign.
