Pundit unhappy with 'unprofessional' Leeds decision as controversial footage published on club account

Noel Whelan has slammed the lack of “consistency and professionalism” among referees after Leeds United were on the receiving end of yet another VAR error.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the baffling use of the Video Assistant Referee is “spoiling” football games.

Jarrod Bowen pounced on an 18-yard-box melee to put West Ham ahead as Leeds United fell 2-0 in the FA Cup third round yesterday (9 January).

However, replays appeared to show Bowen interfering in play while standing in an offside position.

Nevertheless, VAR checked and ultimately awarded the goal having found no clear and obvious error with the on-field decision.

Whelan insisted he is “scratching his head” after the latest in a spate of controversial refereeing decisions this term.

“Again, it’s becoming a consistency with VAR at this point,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“I can sympathise with the on-pitch officials, it all happened very quickly and there was a lot of hustle and bustle in the box.

“But when it goes upstairs, you’re looking for that professionalism, that consistency, and most importantly – you’re looking for them to get it right.

“It seems that we’re losing focus on the football again and focusing more on bad decisions that have been made upstairs in the VAR.

“I’m really scratching my head now because I just can’t understand how they can be getting it wrong so many times, and it’s really impacting and spoiling games and results.”

West Ham now face an away trip to Kidderminster Harriers in the fourth round.

Leeds United face another trip to the London Stadium to face the Irons on Saturday.

The Whites sit 16th in the Premier League.
