Pundit verdict on Pep Guardiola rejecting Man City contract amid '£500,000-a-week' claim

Tam McManus has claimed Pep Guardiola will not entertain leaving Man City until he wins the Champions League amid speculation about his future at the club.

The former Hibernian striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 51-year-old’s ability to keep his “£500,000-a-week” superstars “hungry” despite continued success.

Guardiola’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season.

However, 90min claim (8 November) Man City are “hopeful” that he will extend his stay – with a “broad agreement” already in place for him to remain at the Etihad Stadium until 2025.

Guardiola has won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and four League Cups since joining the club in 2016.

The Spaniard’s side currently sit second in the English top flight – two points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

McManus suggested it must be “difficult to motivate” his squad of mega-money stars despite consistent backing in the transfer market.

He told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild: “I think he’s the best manager in the world.

“His style of play is consistent, it’s attacking, it’s expansive.

“He’s been heavily backed in the transfer market but when you get all these players in, it must be difficult to motivate these guys who are on £500,000-a-week.

“He keeps them hungry, he keeps them on their toes – and that’s the sign of great man management.

“I don’t see him leaving until he wins the Champions League with Man City.

“I think once he wins that, he’ll have completed his CV at the club.”
