Pundit verdict on whether Sessegnon has 'blown it' at Tottenham after 'massive' development

Noel Whelan has insisted Ryan Sessegnon could have lost the trust of Tottenham boss Antonio Conte after his sending off against NS Mura.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 21-year-old let the Italian down “massively”.

Sessegnon saw red in Slovenia after just half an hour, receiving a second yellow card for a lunging tackle.

Sessegnon has started just three games for Spurs this season, all of which came in European competition.

Whelan insisted the dismissal is a “massive blow” for the youngster but stopped short of declaring his Tottenham career over.

“He’s not the type of manager who is going to give players too many chances,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“Every game these players take part in is a game where they need to impress and show Conte why they deserve to be at the club.

“You can be eager and excited, but you’ve got to show some discipline as well – and Sessegnon didn’t do that.

“It’s a massive blow for him because this was his opportunity. Has he blown it? Probably not, but at the same time he hasn’t done himself any favours.

“Conte has to trust his players to do the right thing and perform out there – and he’s let him down massively with that lack of discipline and the manager will be taking that into consideration.

“The only consolation is that he wasn’t the only one – there were plenty out there who were a disgrace to the shirt last night.”

Sessegnon signed for Tottenham in 2019 and cost a reported £25million.

Thursday’s loss leaves Spurs’ qualification for the latter stages of the Europa Conference League in the balance.
