Pundit View: Celtic have made approach to sign ‘Their Steven Davis’ – Exclusive
Celtic have registered their interest in Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy – and he would have a similar impact to Steven Davis at Rangers if signed.
That is the view of former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the prospect of the 30-year-old moving to Parkhead.
McCarthy has entered the final six months of his contract at Selhurst Park and is now allowed to speak to foreign clubs regarding a pre-contract agreement.
As revealed by Football Insider, the Hoops are keeping tabs on the Republic of Ireland international’s situation as they look to bolster their midfield.
The centre-midfielder has made nine appearances for Crystal Palace this season and started the Eagles’ 1-0 win over Wolves on Saturday.
Campbell is adamant that McCarthy would be a smart addition to Neil Lennon’s squad.
“I would like to think that McCarthy could be Celtic’s equivalent of Steven Davis,” he told Football Insider.
“McCarthy is a very good player. It could be a great move for him because Celtic are a huge club.
“They need revamping a bit because their level has dropped this season. They need to address that squad and that team quickly.
“James McCarthy is a player who could help, I think it would be a really good signing.”
Davis has been instrumental for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers in his 30 appearances this season.
The 36-year-old midfielder moved to Ibrox on a free transfer in July 2019 following the expiration of his contract at Southampton.
