Pundit weighs in on Virgil van Dijk 'problem' after Liverpool reveal via ESPN

Kevin Campbell has rubbished the idea Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was overplayed in the 2021-22 campaign.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Arsenal and Everton striker said last season’s exploits should not be used as an excuse for this season’s “problem.”

Van Dijk has had an indifferent start to the 2022-23 campaign, along with many of his Liverpool teammates.

As revealed by ESPN (16 September), the centre-half has played the most minutes of any player in Europe over the past year.

Only Gustavo Gomez of Palmeiras has more game time to his name than the Netherlands international from 15 September 2021 to 14 September 2022.

When asked by Football Insider if Van Dijk had been overplayed, Campbell said: “You could say that is part of the problem but as a player you want to play.

“Van Dijk had such a long time out he will want to play as much as he can.

“The thing is, he was outstanding for the majority of last season. He played in all of those games, it was ridiculous.

“He has had a summer and had a rest now. You cannot blame last season for it.

“Listen, Liverpool have just let their levels drop a touch. It is going to take a little bit of time to get back to where they were. When you are at a team like that any everyone drops 10 per cent other teams have a chance. When Liverpool are at their best they blow teams away.

“I do not think you can blame last season for this season’s problems.”
