Pundit 'wowed' as West Ham tipped to beat Aston Villa in race to sign Digne
Noel Whelan has tipped West Ham to see off competition to secure Lucas Digne’s capture from Everton this month.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested regular game time at a high-flying side like the Hammers would be enough to tempt Digne into agreeing to a move.
Football Insider broke the news on Wednesday (5 January) that Aston Villa have set their sights on signing the Goodison left-back this month.
Whelan insisted the Frenchman’s availability this month will have come as a surprise to many clubs.
He suggested the Irons could be in pole position to seal a deal.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You’ve got Aaron Cresswell there. However, he is injured at the minute. There’s an opportunity straightaway to fit straight into that side.

“We know the quality that he’s got. I’m sure that most teams didn’t expect Lucas Digne to be available from Everton when Rafa Benitez came into the club.
“This is something most people will be rubbing their hands over. They’ll be thinking: ‘Wow. A natural left full-back, great quality on the ball, good defender as well, experienced.’
“It doesn’t surprise me there are suitors out there that are wanting his footballing abilities. He would be another piece of the puzzle that I’m sure would help West Ham.
“He’d give them more experience as well in the backline. We know they’re struggling as well for left-backs at the minute.
“There’s are a lot of good propositions out there but for me, West Ham is the one. You’ve got more chance of playing regularly in that side and being successful.”
Digne has not played for Everton since the start of December.
He has 113 Premier League appearances under his belt.
